Creating a Virtual PE Class in Google Slides

One of the main challenges of going into my new PE position is the possibility of not being able to connect with the students for weeks, possibly months.

It's impossible to know how or when this pandemic era will end, but in the meantime, I want to make sure I am preparing the most fun and interactive PE class possible.

Enter the Virtual PE Class!

We use Google as a district, so it was simple to hop onto Google Slides to get this set up. You could also use Canva or even PowerPoint, but the following information is geared towards Slides.

The first video I recommend watching is by Thomas Blakemore HERE. He will walk you through creating your background, Bitmoji, and accessories.

I decided against props for this first draft, deciding to show my Bitmoji doing the various activities available to them.

By clicking each Bitmoji, the students are taken straight to a YouTube video explaining drills, skillwork, a dance or challenge, and even a read aloud.

In this first draft there are:

  • How to make a paper airplane
  • Basketball skills
  • Soccer skills
  • A PE-themed scavenger hunt
  • Dance party
  • Yoga
  • Read Aloud
  • Running practice

You can experience the fun HERE. In order to do this, I went to "File"--> "Present" and then copied and pasted the link. This allows kids to directly access the Slide in "Present" mode.

You could also download this as a clickable PDF with the same result.

I hope you enjoy this first draft and, like me, are already thinking of ways to improve, differentiate, and assess its effectiveness.

In the future, I will be working on:

  • Differentiating by grade level (I teach K-5, so multiple versions of this will be necessary)
  • Ensuring students know how to access this and know the expectations and timelines
  • Creatively thinking of ways for students to show their participation, perhaps through a form or check-in process
  • Making sure I am addressing all modalities and learning styles

Stay tuned as I add to and adjust this early draft.
